Mel Boring
After Mel's lively book talks, many kids call him Mel UN-Boring. Three of his books are CATERPILLARS, BUGS AND BUTTERFLIES, BIRDS, NESTS AND EGGS and RABBITS, SQUIRRELS AND CHIPMUNKS. Mel has written about Native Americans, fascinating constructions like the Statue of Liberty, and clowns. He just finished GUINEA PIG SCIENTISTS, a book about scientists who experimented on themselves. Mel has written for children in K-8; and his years of classroom teaching all ages from kindergarten to college put him at ease with any age. He likes to eat lunch with the children, even play on the playground with them. Mel feels he lives at whatever place he goes to talk about writing. He's a workhorse, willing to do as many programs a day as his hosts feel are needed at their individual site at no extra charge. He prefers working with small groups so he can talk with children and answer their questions, teaching them how to write their own books. Yet he's also comfortable with larger assemblies, where he does more to entertain, wearing his Cat-in-the-Hat suit, or showing posters of his books' pictures. He loves autographing books. Fees: $750 a day or part-day, plus travel and lodging expenses.

Dori Butler
Dori grew up in southern Minnesota. She was an only child until she was almost 9 years old, so she spent a lot of time alone. She wrote stories (mostly about kids with big families) to entertain herself and never quit!Dori has never held a "real" job, unless you count the three years she worked in the library during high school. She started out writing for magazines and has published stories in Cricket, Spider, Highlights for Children, Children's Digest, Child Life and various Sunday School publications. From there she got hired as a ghostwriter and wrote books for the Sweet Valley Twins series.
Her first book was The Great Tooth Fairy Rip-Off (Fairview Press, 1997). That was followed by 4 state ABC books, a nonfiction book, Whodunit: How the Police Solve Crimes, a short chapter book, Just in Time, Vinny, and three middle grade novels: Sliding Into Home, Trading Places with Tank Talbott and the forthcoming, Do You Know the Monkey Man.
Dori walks 4 miles every morning and enjoys reading, hiking, biking, digital photography and board games (she plays a mean game of Scrabble!). She lives in Coralville with her husband, two sons and assorted pets.
