CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - From vaudeville to radio, from film to television, the art of ventriloquism has fascinated (and sometimes frightened) audiences of all ages for centuries. What is so tantalizing about talking dolls?

It's incorrect to call them "dolls," however. The correct term is "vent figure." Many people, including ventriloquists, refer to the puppets as "dummies"--but never within earshot of, well, you know, the vent figure. It's considered impolite.

To learn more, explore the various sections by navigating through the links at left or the links at the bottom of each page. To hear the audio clips, click on the radio--you may need to be patient for the sound file to start. And for a little extra fun, hold your mouse over different graphic icons and a secret message will appear!
